The Mano River Union Women Peace Network, MARWOPNET, Sierra Leone has updated His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio on their activities and also highlighted some of their challenges for government’s considerations.

The focal person, Rosaline Macarthy said they were happy to be able to meet the President and commend him for some of the positive gains his government had made for women and girls and the most recent efforts in the victory of Leone Stars, now qualified for AfCON games in Cameroon, January next year. 

On the issue of violence against women and girls, she praised the setting up of the Sexual Offenses Model Court; the separation of the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs from the Ministry of Social Welfare; the  compact eligibility from Millennium Challenge Cooperation; the proactive measures against the COVID-19 pandemic; the cash direct transfers to disabled by the National Commission for Social Action during the lockdowns and the diplomatic ways in which he handled the Yenga border issue with Guinea.

At the ongoing 47th Session of the Human Rights Council; Deputy Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations Office, His Excellency Samuel U.B. Saffa, Esq.  has called for technical support to UN member states to strengthen human rights mechanisms .

The Ambassador note the emphasis placed by the Office of the High Commissioner in providing timely advice on human rights-based responses to COVID-19 and for offering evidence-based policy options for protecting and promoting human rights in the pandemic recovering process.

Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, Her Excellency Madam Isatu Aminata Bundu has met with top Kenya based industrialist, Mr. Narendra Rameshchandra Raval (Guru). The Business man, popularly known as “Guru”, is the owner of Devki Group which has employed over 4,000 Kenyans, 430 Congolese and 500 Ugandans operating in their respective countries.

Narendra Rameshchandra Raval said he is working towards improving the relationship between the two countries in terms of business and development. He confirmed that he will explore business opportunities between the two countries, adding that he would also look forward to taking investors to Sierra Leone within the shortest possible time as soon as COVID-19 subsides.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prof. David J. Francis. said Sierra Leone has been on the tarmac since it gained independence in 1961 but it is ready to take off now under the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.

He was addressing an audience of Africa Ambassadors in United States, current and former State Officials, business people, philanthropists , intellectuals, and the Sierra Leone diaspora community in the United States during a hosted a dinner at the residence of Ambassador Sidique Abou -Bakar Wai,Prof.

He dilated on the political foreign policy shift from Economic Diplomacy to Development Diplomacy with the intent of making Sierra Leone more attractive to investors who want to undertake credible investment. Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister assured interested investors of security and transparency, and with a one -stop with the Investment Board in Sierra Leone where all issues ranging from registration to implementation is readily made available to incoming investors.

Professor David J. Francis admonished the audience that the COVID pandemic has left untold stories in the world where big economies also suffered heavy blow, and the impact is being felt by Sierra Leone which is a donor driven country. This dimensional change has forced Sierra Leone to adjust itself in the dynamics of a changing world. Hence the policy shift to Development Diplomacy.
