In her opening remarks, Director of Gender Goodie Sowonie highlighted the significance of addressing GBV and its impact on female inmates, their families, and society. She also stressed the importance of the Child Rights Act in protecting children nationwide and addressing concerns like sexual violence.
Deputy Director General Susan B. Coker echoed the call for inmates to refrain from violence, underscoring the importance of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV as a tool for raising awareness. She encouraged inmates to be law-abiding and take advantage of reintegration and rehabilitation opportunities, including mental health support, skills training, and socio-economic empowerment programs. "Prison is not an ideal place for you," she urged them to work toward positive change.
Hannah A. Robinson from the Gender Directorate spoke on mental health and hygiene, stressing the importance of personal sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks within the facility. "Personal hygiene is crucial for your well-being," she stated.
Assistant Director Bamie J. Sesay outlined the implications of violence in correctional facilities, particularly physical bullying, and called for unity among inmates. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring women and girls reach their full potential.
The Director of Gender and Equal Opportunities at the correctional centre expressed gratitude to the Ministry and its officials for the timely initiative. She praised their commitment to empowering women and encouraged inmates to heed the advice given.
