Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs participate in Beach Clean-Up Ahead of Women in Tourism Regional Congress.

he Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and several key partners, conducted a comprehensive clean-up exercise along Lumley and Aberdeen Beaches on October 26, 2024. The initiative was a prelude to the upcoming Women in Tourism Regional Congress, scheduled to be held at the Freetown International Conference Centre. Themed "Empowerment through Education, Innovation, and Financial Access," the congress is expected to attract participants from across the region.



Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Madam Nabeela Tunis, expressed enthusiasm for the clean-up effort, emphasizing the significance of maintaining Sierra Leone's pristine beaches, popular destinations for locals and international visitors. "Aberdeen and Lumley beaches are essential to our tourism landscape, attracting visitors worldwide. Keeping these sites clean enhances their appeal and is crucial as we prepare to host the Women in Tourism Regional Congress," Minister Tunis stated. She thanked the EU, National Tourist Board, International Organization for Migration (IOM), Shout Climate Change Africa, and other participating organizations for their active involvement in the clean-up.

In further preparation for the congress, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Kadijatu Grace Kamara, mobilized a broad section of the community, including representatives from the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) Women's Wing, youth groups, Marie V Entertainment, the Orphan Empowerment Society, Local Content personnel, Youth for Human Rights, the Student Association for Environmental Protection Transformation, and numerous volunteers. The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of collective action in tourism promotion and beach preservation.



"Tourism is everyone's responsibility. These beaches often serve as the first impression of our nation to visitors. We are committed to ensuring they reflect the beauty and hospitality of Sierra Leone," said Dr. Kamara, underscoring the need for a sustained focus on environmental upkeep, especially in light of the high-profile congress.

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs remains focused on ensuring a successful Women in Tourism Regional Congress, enhancing the nation's reputation as a tourist destination, and fostering community engagement in maintaining clean public spaces.
