The Ministry of Tourism has lent its support to a two-day Surf Competition organized by Ahma Surf Sierra Leone at No. 2 River Beach. The event, held on November 30 and continuing into December 1, 2024, brought together over 40 young participants—both boys and girls—from Bureh, Sussex, Bobor, and No. 2 River Beach communities.
Celebrating Surfing as a Tourism Sport
Representing the Minister of Tourism, Nabeela F. Tunis, Senior Tourism Officer Abdul Malik Kamara served as Chief Judge for the competition. Joining him on the panel of judges were notable figures including N. Yone Ba Yasshi, Country Representative for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Gerald Hater, Head of Cooperation at the EU; Steven Abioseh Pratt, Surf Expert; Kadiatu Kamara, Sierra Leone Female Surfer; and Aisha Koroma, SRN from AMTA Medical Center Kissy.
In a statement delivered on behalf of the Minister, the Ministry emphasized the role of surfing in promoting Sierra Leone as a prime ecotourism destination. The sport, the message highlighted, not only markets the country internationally but also offers socio-economic benefits by creating jobs and generating income for local communities.
“Surfing is more than just a sport; it is an avenue to empower young people and enhance community livelihoods while preserving our beaches and ocean resources,” the Minister’s message conveyed.
The Ministry has recognized Ahma Surf Club as a partner and ambassador for ecotourism, committed to promoting conservation efforts, including the regulation of sand mining and effective waste management practices at Sierra Leone’s beaches.
Ministry’s Contributions and Recognition
Through the One Love Sierra Leone Foundation, the Ministry provided participants with school bags, T-shirts, educational materials, and financial support. Mohamed Jalloh, Director of Tourism, Travel, and Exchange Programs, signed certificates for all contestants on behalf of the Minister.
Alie Sesay, Manager of the Surf School, expressed profound gratitude to the Ministry for its recognition and support of surfing as a potential tourism sport.
“This event is a step forward in demonstrating how surfing can drive socioeconomic growth in Sierra Leone while showcasing our beautiful beaches,” Sesay remarked.
