The National Commission for Democracy (NCD) marked its 30th anniversary with a theme that underscores its dedication to democratic governance: “NCD @30: Towards the Promotion of Democratic Good Governance in Sierra Leone.”
The Deputy Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs, Philip Tetema Tondoneh, delivered the keynote address at the celebration, held at the Foreign Affairs Academy in Tower Hill, Freetown. The event was attended by representatives from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs); civil society; the council of paramount chiefs; youth and women’s groups; the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC); the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL); and members of the international community.
Achievements in Democracy
Deputy Minister Tondoneh praised the NCD for its unwavering commitment to fostering democracy in Sierra Leone. He highlighted the Commission's pivotal role in the country's transition to a multiparty democracy in 1996, just two years after its establishment.
“The celebration of NCD’s 30 years is a moment to reignite the passion that was unleashed in 1994, as the Commission continues to champion Sierra Leone’s democratic aspirations,” Tondoneh stated.
He reiterated that democracy is a continuous process, not a one-time event, urging all stakeholders to work together in making Sierra Leone a model democracy admired globally.
Strengthening the NCD's Framework
Deputy Minister Tondoneh emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing the legal framework of the NCD to align with 21st-century standards. He noted that the Ministry of Public Administration and Political Affairs (MoPAPA), formerly the Ministry of Political and Public Affairs, is focused on renewing and transforming the NCD for greater impact.
He cited the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, Section 5(1), which underscores the nation’s foundation on freedom, democracy, and justice, commending the NCD for staying true to these principles.
The Call for Continued Support
In his address, Tondoneh stressed the need to support the NCD to ensure its success. “The role of the NCD in promoting democratic good governance should not just be acknowledged but actively supported,” he urged.
As the nation celebrates this milestone, the Deputy Minister called on all stakeholders to uphold and strengthen democratic values, fostering a more inclusive and participatory political landscape.
The event highlighted the achievements of the NCD over the past three decades while setting the stage for continued efforts toward democratic development.
