Saint Francis Secondary School marked its 66th anniversary with a grand celebration featuring Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh as the keynote speaker. The event, held on the school’s campus in Makeni, was themed “Celebrating Our Legacy, Diversity, and Building Bridges” and brought together students, alumni, staff, and community leaders to honour the school’s profound legacy and its role in fostering a united and progressive society.
In his address, Vice President Dr. Jalloh commended the institution for its remarkable contributions to Sierra Leone’s educational landscape over the past six decades. “Today, we celebrate not just the academic achievements of Saint Francis Secondary School but also the legacy of diversity, excellence, and community-building it has championed,” he stated.
Dr. Jalloh underscored the critical role of education as a driver of personal growth and societal development. He encouraged students to embrace learning as a tool for future success, emphasising the importance of empathy, respect, and inclusivity. “Education is not merely about acquiring knowledge but about understanding others, fostering unity, and building stronger communities,” he said. He further called on the students to uphold these values as they navigate their academic and personal journeys.
The Vice President reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the education sector, citing efforts to increase the number of qualified teachers, enhance learning infrastructure, and expand access to higher education. “We are investing in our future by strengthening the foundations of education, ensuring every child has an opportunity to excel,” he remarked. Drawing on his educational experiences, Dr. Jalloh encouraged students to remain focused, cultivate lifelong friendships, and recognise that learning extends beyond the classroom.
Mr. Henry Amadu Kargbo, President of the Old Boys Association, praised Saint Francis Secondary School for producing some of Sierra Leone’s most influential leaders. Reflecting on the school’s history, he urged stakeholders to continue collaborating to secure its future. “This school stands as a pillar of excellence and innovation. Let us harness its diversity and collective strength to chart a path forward,” he said. Mr. Kargbo announced ongoing projects, including constructing a modern administrative building funded through corporate partnerships, underscoring the Association’s dedication to the school’s progress.
Brigadier Kemoh Sessy, Brigade Commander of the 5th Northern East Infantry, also delivered remarks emphasising the values of compassion, unity, and discipline instilled through education. He encouraged students to consider careers in the military, describing it as an honourable opportunity to serve the nation while acquiring valuable skills. “Reject violence and focus on your education. You are the future leaders of this nation,” he advised, calling for responsible use of social media and promoting peace within communities.
The ceremony’s highlights included the presentation of awards to outstanding students and teachers for their exceptional performance. A standout pupil delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Vice President, school authorities, and event organizers for their contributions to the occasion's success.
The event concluded on a high note, with Vice President Dr. Jalloh reaffirming his support for educational initiatives and pledging to return to further engage with the school community. His presence and message of hope resonated deeply, reinforcing the school’s enduring legacy as a cornerstone of education in Sierra Leone.
