In a landmark event for healthcare in Kono District, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has commissioned an ultra-modern ambulance at the Koidu Government Hospital. This marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to improving medical services across Sierra Leone.
The ambulance, equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies, is expected to enhance emergency response times, save lives, and improve patient outcomes. Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Jalloh acknowledged the challenges faced by Koidu Government Hospital in delivering timely medical care due to outdated ambulances.
“Months ago, during a security briefing in Kono, I learned about the critical mobility issues here. The ambulances were unreliable, making it difficult to provide timely medical assistance. This new ambulance is more than a vehicle; it is a lifeline for the people of Kono,” said Vice President Jalloh.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure in addressing healthcare disparities and reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare nationwide.
The Mayor of Koidu City, Komba Mathew Sam, lauded the initiative, describing it as a turning point for healthcare delivery in the district. “This ambulance represents hope for our community. It will play a crucial role in emergencies, particularly for expectant mothers and children,” he thanked the Vice President for his leadership.
Dr. Mohamed G. Sheku, the District Medical Officer (DMO), expressed gratitude for the government’s support. He highlighted the transformative impact of recent investments in the hospital, including a Special Care Baby Unit with a 98% survival rate for premature infants and the installation of an oxygen plant.
“The introduction of this ambulance will significantly reduce delays in medical transport, especially in remote areas, and contribute to lowering maternal mortality. We are deeply grateful for this critical addition to our healthcare infrastructure,” said Dr. Sheku.
The ambulance's commissioning is part of a broader initiative to upgrade healthcare services in Kono District. Recent investments include solar-powered facilities and expanded care units aimed at transforming Koidu Government Hospital into a model for regional healthcare excellence.
Vice President Jalloh underscored the government’s determination to leave no one behind as he handed over the keys to the ambulance. “This is not just about providing an ambulance. It’s about creating a sustainable healthcare system that meets the needs of every Sierra Leonean,” he said.
With the commissioning of the ultra-modern ambulance, residents of Kono District can look forward to a future of accessible and timely healthcare services. This initiative is a testament to the government’s dedication to improving the well-being of all Sierra Leoneans.
